Join exhibition curators Maggie Finch and Patrick Pound for an informal viewing of Robert Rooney's movies.
Robert Rooney's first film, Anzacs, was made in 1973 using a Super 8 camera, and followed a similar logic to the conceptualist photo-works that he was producing at that time – using the camera to document daily routines and events in a rhythmic and repetitive manner that was equal parts serious, humorous and absurd. In 2009 Rooney began looking back through his archives of photographs and photo-works from the 1970s, and started working with this material again. Photographs were scanned and animated using Roxio Toast Motion software, and set to musical compositions written and performed by Rooney. They have a structure and format comparable to his earlier photo-works. As Rooney has said, the new films that use old photographs are 'strictly low-tech, which is what I liked about it … The length of each movie was determined by the length of the music accompanying it'.
Join us in viewing a selection of films by Robert Rooney that feature his unique experimental musical compositions, and date from 1973 through to 2009.
