In this one-day workshop you will have the opportunity to learn from leading professional photographer Jo Duck. See behind the scenes as Jo takes you from an artwork brief to a finished image, via the process and creative thinking and construction of a moodboard. Briefed on a theme and with instructions on creating your own moodboard prior to class you will share your finished moodboard upon arrival and be encouraged to collaborate, workshop ideas as a group and bring these to life. Up to three moodboards will then be selected to photograph in a studio-like environment.

Working with studio flash and your digital cameras (film also welcome), Jo will guide you through the technical process of setting up several simple and effective studio lighting scenarios, some of which may be easily replicated at home or in your studio. To conclude the workshop, participant's images will be shared with the class and Jo will lead a constructive discussion of valuable feedback. Participants are encouraged to bring along props and will be provided with the model's headshot before class. Get inspired, get creative, learn practical skills and gain insight into Jo’s practice!

A moodboard is a collection of images that can be used to spark inspiration for a new idea or to help define a work in progress. The images collected by the photographer (usually online), are often not their own, and could refer to colour, composition, lighting, mood, pose, expression, texture etc. Moodboards are used by a lot of different creatives in all industries to help solidify an idea or streamline the creative process.

This workshop is suitable for people with no previous experience or intermediate experience of studio lighting. A working knowledge of your camera is required.

ABOUT JO DUCK
Jo Duck is a commercial photographer based in Melbourne. Jo draws inspiration from cinema, music, light, or as she says, anywhere from “UFOs to Dolly Parton”. The result is a portfolio of editorial fashion work that is flamboyant, humorous, heart-warming, bizarre, and above all, technically excellent. Jo’s work has appeared in publications such as Harpers Bazaar, Monocle and i-D. She has shot for a range of premium fashion and arts clients, including Nike, Bonds, the National Gallery of Victoria and the Australian Ballet. The enchanting frivolity of Jo’s work belies a depth of research and her exhaustive approach to pre-production which enables the creation of such atmospheric narratives.

Jo's celebrated and playful work was exhibited as part of the 2019 CCP Photo Fair.
